Every state has different set of laws that allow consumers to fight under the lemom law and also controls how much the auto manufacturers are allowed to pay you. Some of the states laws are more effective than other states as those states may have weak laws that are more in the auto industries favor than yours.
I live in california, but i had bought the car in Texas. Since i was living in California i had to fight the lemon law federally instead state which is called the Magnuson Moss Law. One of the provisions in the Magnuson Moss Law states that the auto manufacturers are allowed to follow the state that the car was purchased at.
California particulary has a very reasonable law that allows the refund to be the time the first defect had started. In texas whether you have had 4 defects or not or where ever it started to break down the auto manufactures are allowed to deduct from the mileage of the car, usually 15%. So if you have 4 defects and 30,000 miles on your car they can take up to 4,000 dollars where in california if your defect started at 5,000 miles they are allowed to take 300-400 hundred dollars.
As you can see California has a much better law than Texas with law of California being on the consumers side while the law in Texas is more on the Auto Manufacturers side.
Now before you buy a car make sure you check in with your local lemon laws and if they dont have good lemon laws try to buy a well known car that has less problems or buy it in another state. If not you can lose up to ten thousand dollars from having a lemon if your laws dont protect the consumers. I personally got burned for 7,000 dollars since i fell under Texas Law.
Surf the internet, talk to a lawyer, and know what you can do if you think you have a lemon. Above all things KNOW YOUR RIGHTS........ Thank you......
